Boo Reads

Have you ever read Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House? I haven’t read anything else of hers besides “The Lottery,” but am now quite charmed, and spooked, by her book. It’s a short treat, and great for the week before Halloween, if time allows, and your brain needs a rest. I am about halfway through, and so far, so spooky.

Okay, so after writing that and saying how good the book was, I continued to go to bed and have itchy scratchy dreams inspired by the book. In one of them a leprous woman was driving and convertible with Alfred Hitchcock in the passenger seat. He died. There were cliffs involved, and some very creepy architecture (and skin lesions). No more reading before bedtime!

Just finished reading Haunting of Hill House…wasn’t as delicious as it promised to be. Oh well. It’s that classic issue of it is easier to make the symptoms and starts of fear much more creepy than the source…of course, I did wake up this morning and find my back door mysteriously open, so maybe I am talking a bit arrogantly…
